The Woolly Worm Festival Committee will be holding an official opening ceremony at 6:00pm at the stage on Main Street. Numerous awards for “Citizen of the Year”, “Volunteer of the Year”, and etc. will be presented. Special guest to be honored will be Lee County’s surviving Work War II Veterans. These veterans are: Ila Ray Barnes, Raymond Congleton, Alfred Deaton, Vernon Shouse, Dr. John Smith, Roy Durbin, Lerman Newman, Charles Newman, William Abner Jr., Jonas Hollon, Ottis Judd, James Combs, Lonnie Ross, Darvel Barrett, Eugene Deaton, Alan Gabbard Sr., Albert Stamper, Jim Farmer, Ellis E. Gentry, Basil Durbin, Mary Hellen McGuire, WIlliam Booge Jones, Beckman Fraley and Robert Gabbard. The WWF Committee still needs to know the branch of service from some of the survivors. If, because of health risks, some veterans cannot personally attend, family members will be present to accept their awards. Call in information to (606) 464-2888.
