Lago Linda Hideaway
One of the gems of Eastern Kentucky lies serenely hidden away about eight miles west of Beattyville on Hwy 52. Lago Linda Hideaway is a 410 acre preserve that accomodates a broad range of visitors to these magical mountains and mysterious river valleys. If you want to “rough it” in a tent, step up and bring your home with you in an RV, or just move in to one of the expertly decorated cabins, Linda and Doug Black are ready to accomodate you. Whether seeking romance, solitude, inspiration, or adventure, the 15 miles of trails, picturesque lake and abundant wildlife are there to enhance the experience. And your hosts, a unique and interesting pair, set a standard for service that is second to none.
Linda from Liverpool England, met Doug at a sailing club in Washington DC on one of her trips to America. They were married in 1992 and Linda bought into Doug’s dream to develop a piece of property he owned in Eastern Kentucky. They moved into his log cabin home and have been sharing their land and themselves with others since.
The name Lago Linda Hideaway grew from two separate incidents: First, Doug and Linda built a dam to catch water from two mountain streams to form their lake. As it was filling, Doug ammounced the lake should be called “Lago Linda,” meaning Linda’s Lake. Years later a visiting Berea student documenting trails and wildlife commented, “it is a perfect hideaway” . Thus, Lago Linda Hideaway was born.
One has only to visit their website,http://lagolinda.com/ , to see how these two very special people truly cherish their little piece of Appalachia and relish sharing it with others.

Rose Brothers Dept. Store
August 13th 2009 almost brought an end to a Beattyville era. As the fire consumed almost an entire city block, it was eating away at Rose Brothers which has been a part of the local community since 1931. Founded by Green Rose, the store has grown and changed with the times bringing a broad range of goods to the community for over 70 years. From overalls to fine china; from kids shoes to guitar strings; Rose Brothers has always been on top of the latest trends and gadgets to make life more pleasant. Lucille Lumpkins, the local manager, who has worked for the store since 1976, said ” we have a little bit of everything for everybody”.
Doug, Mike, and Phyllis Rose have continued the family tradition and kept Rose Brothers alive in Beattyville. They found a temporary space on Railroad Street in the old Stufflebean building and on October 30th opened the doors. They offer name products like Levi, Lee, Carhart, redwing, Nike, Vera Bradley and Village Candle. Things might look a little stacked in the space, but Lucille, Regina and Edna will be glad to help you find what you are looking for.
The rocking chair bench is there still, so come in and sit awhile.
Extreme Hair Design
Extreme Hair Design isn’t really a new business in Beattyville. Owners, Cindy and Aaron Thorpe, actually opened a shop in Lee County in 2003 near the High School. But with the purchase of the old Stufflebean building at the West end of Beattyville on Railroad Road , they opened in town on February 14 2009, quite the Valentine’s day celebration.
Theirs is quite the romantic tale. Together since they were 16, Cindy graduated from LCHS in 1992 and began working in Richmond as a cosmetologist. The hour drive from Canyon Falls to Richmond was taxing and took critical time from her family. Since Lee County is home, they decided to start their own business. Between the two of them, and their daughter Desiree, they have started a one stop mall for all your beauty needs.
Besides all your cosmetology needs, they have an eight bed tanning salon with two beds that give “super” tans. Robert Hays Jr, P.A-C, visits monthly to provide Botox and cosmetic procedure sessions. Jennifer Broadwell gives full body massages in the shop by appointment as well. When you’re all done up, knock on Angie Fox’s door (in the shop) and have “Foxy Photos” take a glamour shot. If you are looking for a new purse or accent for your outfit, you can also browse through the “Mini Peddlers Mall”.

Extreme Hair Design is open from 11 AM to 8 PM (or later) Tuesday through Saturday. Call for an appointment or more information. At: 606-464-9300
