Joann Butts was the lead painter on the war memorial mural here in Beattyville. She spent a week completing this project in 2012 and those of us involved with this project came to love and appreciate this talented lady. She, along with her cousin Minnie Adkins, will be honored at a show in Cincinnati at the YWCA. There will be an opening reception on April 4, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. but the show continues through June 3, 2014. Address for the YWCA is 898 Walnut Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. The following is a quote from the invitation.
Jo Ann appreciates creating “something from nothing.” Growing up poor, she used a pocketknife to make bows, arrows and papaw whistles. She followed in the footsteps of her cousin, Minnie Adkins, creating art that is both witty and quaint. Her work reflects her upbringing on a large family farm, with lots of animals and chores. These fanciful pastoral scenes are reminders of a more peaceful past.
