Crate Stacking Competition at 2012 Rocktoberfest

The highlight of the weekend was Rocktoberfest 2012 in the Natural Bridge Campgrounds. For three days, around 300 rock climbers from all over the world gather in the Red River Gorge, Murr Valley, and the Pendergrass Murray Recreational Preserve for a weekend of competitions, exhibitions, and networking. In the evening vendors set up booths in the campgrounds to sell rock climbing gear and outdoor wear. There were crake stacking competitions where a climber would see how many milk crates they could climb on before falling. No one broke last years record of 23 crates. The Red River Gorge Climbing Coalition out did themselves as they booked a the 23 String Band from Louisville, KY for the Saturday night entertainment. Their lively bluegrass jive music had everyone dancing in the large tent. One of the esteemed speakers had brought back a slideshow from their climb up Mt. Everest! This year’s Rocktoberfest was also a celebration of the RRGCC’s final payment for the PMRP 750 acre purchase in Lee County. Look for rock climbers at the RRGCC booth at this year’s Woolly Worm Festival in Beattyville, KY October 19-21st. For more information visit their website at www.rrgcc.org.
